The Sicilian Series
Limited Print Release 2004

This series was photographed in 1984. I was convalescing, having had an operation which left the right side of my face paralysed. My face recovered it's nerve, or nerves, except for a quarter of my kisser, and my bonus was a Doctor's order to take a holiday. So, in the cool light of the early Mediterranean spring I recovered. Training my newly appreciated right eye on the uncomplicated life of my various hosts in Sciacca, on the south-west coast of Sicily.

In 2002 I had a fire in my studio. It was a mess and much of my art was spoiled, or ruined. The original prints of the Sicilian series were damaged having never been shown. Sad, I thought, wrong too.

I found the negatives, in reasonable shape, and painstakingly reproduced the photographs, experimenting yes, with the very latest and highest-grade archival papers and pigments. I like how they turned out eventually, after a lot of work. I liked those people I photographed back then, and I like them now.
